DescriptionMy website discusses the areas of digital access, assistive technology, digital etiquette, digital communication, and digital rights and responsibilities. My intent for this website is to be a resource for parents of students who are entering the world of digital technology. I have provided links and videos that will help the parents prepare their children to become better digital citizens. I have provided examples and suggestions for parents who may not know exactly how to handle situations that their children may encounter in the digital world. On the assistive technology page I have also provided information for the parents about what their child with a disability is entitled to, as well as examples of some things they can use right at home that will assist their children. I have also, on additional pages, provided activities that the parents can go through with their children to teach them about appropriate behavior and their digital rights and responsibilities as a digital citizen.
Process for Determining: In today’s society it is extremely important that we teach the appropriate behaviors of a good digital citizen. Children are entering the world of digital technology earlier and earlier. It is important that we as adults and parents teach our children what is acceptable and not acceptable behavior when being a citizen in the digital world. There are too many opportunities for children to get into dangerous situations if they are not properly instructed on appropriate digital etiquette. My goal in creating this website is to reach out to the parents of children who are now entering the world of digital technology, and provide them with information that can help them teach their children about digital citizenship as well as hopefully protect their children from the dangers of the digital world. My hope is that parents can take the information that I have provided, and sit down with their children and go through the different links and make sure their children know and understand what exactly a good digital citizen looks like.
Reflection:When first looking at creating this website I have to admit that I was a little overwhelmed. I can honestly say that now that the website is complete it was a worthwhile experience for me. I never realized how much about digital citizenship I did not already know. I learned so much information from completing this assignment. As I was gathering resources and creating my website, I kept changing who my audience was going to be. At first I thought I would make my audience teachers since they work with students all day long and they are trying to integrate technology into their classrooms. I then thought about gearing things more towards the students themselves. I finally decided to gear my website towards the parents of the children who are entering this world of digital citizenship, because with all the other responsibilities put on teachers it is hard for them to teach students appropriate digital etiquette. I figured that like many teachers say learning starts at home. It is important for parents to be involved in their children’s lives, and this includes their digital lives as well. Through the creation of this website I found many helpful resources for parents to communicate with their children about the digital world too. I can not wait to apply the skills that I have learned through creating this website to create a website for my classroom. The program googlesites really was easy to work with and made the experience very manageable for me. I really believe this is something I can see myself using in the very near future.
